For expats living in Korea, how accessible are OB-GYN gynecology and women’s health services in English? Are there clinics or doctors in Korea that are comfortable treating non-Korean speakers, and how easy is it to communicate during appointments.
From my own experience living in Seoul for three years, OB-GYN services are quite accessible in terms of quality, but English availability depends heavily on the clinic. I found that larger international hospitals like those in Gangnam or Itaewon tend to have English-speaking OB-GYNs or at least English coordinators. My first visit was nerve-wracking, but the hospital had a translation service, and the doctor had enough English to explain everything clearly. Smaller neighborhood clinics, however, were much more difficult without Korean.
A close friend of mine who moved to Busan had a bit of a struggle at first. She needed routine OB-GYN care and assumed English would be widely available, but that wasn’t the case in most local clinics. Eventually, she found a doctor through an expat Facebook group recommendation who spoke basic English. She still uses translation apps during visits, but she says the care itself is excellent once communication is managed.
