What are the different stages of menopause and how do symptoms vary?

I’ve been trying to better understand menopause and its different stages, and I’m a bit confused about how it all progresses. I’d like to know more clearly how they differ from each other. How do symptoms change across these stages.

Menopause usually happens in stages perimenopause, menopause, and postmenopause and the symptoms really change over time. For me, perimenopause was the toughest with irregular periods, hot flashes, and mood swings, while things felt more stable after menopause.

What stood out most for me was the brain fog. I could deal with the physical changes better than the mental fuzziness and broken sleep, but that part caught me off guard. During perimenopause I felt like my body kept changing the rules. Later, in postmenopause, the sleep improved little by little, and I stopped feeling quite so scattered. It wasn’t instant, just more manageable over time.

I remember thinking the most difficult phase was the lead-up, not menopause itself. During perimenopause my periods became irregular and my mood felt all over the place, which made ordinary weeks feel oddly unpredictable. Later things calmed down some, although I still dealt with dryness and lower energy for a while. So for me, the stages were real, but they didn’t switch overnight. It was more like a gradual settling.

I had to read quite a bit before I understood why everything felt so inconsistent. For me, perimenopause came with restless sleep and mood changes more than anything else. That stage felt messy. After menopause, life didn’t become perfect, but it did become more predictable, and that alone made it easier to cope with.

My experience changed a lot depending on the stage. Perimenopause was when I noticed the biggest disruption, mainly hot flashes and sleep problems. Later things settled down somewhat, though not completely. A few smaller symptoms stayed in the background. Overall, it felt less dramatic with time, just not as quickly as I expected.
